Abstract
William Henry Fry's "Leonora" is recognized as being the first American opera publicly performed, and it has been arranged popularly for band. Fry, a 19th century composer, also wrote for band. "Metropolitan March," a military band piece, is described, as is "Japanese Embassy March," a piece intended for band that was published in a setting for the piano in honor of the first visit of the Japanese Embassy. The influences and characteristics of these marches are compared. Lastly, the seven band music sections of the opera "Notre-Dame of Paris" are analyzed. All three are typical of band music of the 19th century.
