Abstract
Here, Donnelly says she has observed nurses spinning negative theories and overreacting about the motivations of colleagues, about the intentions of those "in charge," and about their exaggerated importance in the organization all the while ignoring what a privilege it is to care for patients and families and to teach students. She has observed nurses wasting energy on small annoyances and on the second arrow responses of others as if being a negative advocate ever helped a situation. She has observed nurses make precipitous decisions based on false assumptions and resign their positions while obviating the need for a fair exchange on the issues. And, yet, she has observed nurses who find joy in their work, who lend positivity to their environments, and who engage in mindfulness before they act. These nurses have somehow learned to dodge the second arrow.
