Abstract
The article by Gondwe et al. [1], writing on behalf of the American College of Epidemiology Minority Affairs Committee, highlights the progress and challenges our field has experienced in addressing the diversity of the epidemiology workforce since the late 2000s. Although academic institutions initially focused on improving the gender diversity of the field, as the overall male-female gender distribution became more balanced over time (now the field is predominantly persons who identify as women), the focus has shifted to other minoritized groups including persons from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups [2]. While the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action in college admissions found race-conscious admissions policies unconstitutional, public health scholars have affirmed the importance of ensuring the diversity of the public health workforce for continued reduction of health inequities [3].
