Abstract
As Lancaster County continues to grow in popularity among older adults who are retiring, residents should be informed of the health care services that will keep them healthier for longer.
As a student in Drexel University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program, I know how vital physical therapy is in ensuring that older adults stay active, fit and healthy to meaningfully engage in their community.
Falls are the leading cause of injury in adults over age 65, but falls are preventable. Yearly screenings with a physical therapist are a great way to ensure that older adults have the tools they need to stay safe and functionally independent in their daily lives.
Physical therapists are experts in improving balance and function, rehabbing injuries and creating individualized plans to meet patient goals.
Medicare typically will help cover physical therapy for as long as it is medically necessary, and most physical therapy clinics will accept Medicare plans. Physical therapy is a vital part of health care, and it should continue to be highlighted as such.
