Abstract

In Reply We thank Loughlin for their interest in our article analyzing the political campaign contributions of surgeons across the United States during the 2020 election cycle.1 Our objective was to understand and compare the magnitude, geographical distribution, and political partisanship of surgeons across the various surgical specialties. We acknowledge that political contributions compose only 1 form of political engagement and are in agreement with Tracci,2 who correctly points out in the accompanying Invited Commentary that political donations do not necessarily correlate with favorable policies. Advocacy and voting represent indispensable tools that can and must be used to effect systemic change. As we continue to live amidst a multitude of public health crises including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, inadequate access to health care services, the opioid crisis, and the eruption of gun violence, it is more important than ever before for physicians to engage with the political process and to help shape public policy. These crises not only affect the populations that physicians care for, but have also put the lives of physicians at stake.3 In light of this, we must encourage our community to evaluate the nuances of political involvement and to elucidate the most reliable and effective methods of impacting public health legislature.
