Designs for Living: Why engineers need to become philosophers

Abstract
The way to avoid forfeiting human agency in our technological age might lie much earlier in the research-and-development cycle---in the ethical decisions of engineers. Unlike most social scientists and scholars in the humanities, engineers already commit themselves to a complex code of ethics before entering their profession.
