Abstract
In the late nineteenth century, at a time when other women were using birds of paradise feathers and egret plumes to decorate their hats, a Philadelphia naturalist named Ann Graff assembled a scrap book in which she arranged the feathers of local and foreign birds as still life. While each of the seventy-some birds that was sacrificed to create the album is identified by its common, family, genus, or species name, the Graff scrap book can hardly be called a scientific collection. Robert McCracken Peck is Curator of Art and Artifacts and Senior Fellow of the Academy of Natural Sciences ofDrexel University.
