Abstract
Fred Astaire, who was born in 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska, began performing on the vaudeville circuit with his sister Adele. Later in his life, Astaire became very famous in London as a dancer and vocalist--whose made art relates in the words of his character in The Barkleys of Broadway (1949), which seemed to be "fun set to music". Here, Cohen comments and highlights the gathering at Oriel College last month; where film scholars, English professors, dance and music historians, performers and plain enthusiasts pay homage to Astaire's achievement with semiotic analysis and singalongs.
