During the 12th century the practice of writing letters experienced a renaissance leading to what is now considered the golden age of medieval epistolography. This renaissance created the opportunity for communication to be improved and expanded upon, especially in regard to political and religious communications. Medieval letters were now used to persuade their intended audiences in a way that was clearer and more direct, while also being more forceful and effective.
