A recent advancement in minimally invasive spine surgery, unilateral biportal endoscopy integrates the principles of both microscopic and endoscopic techniques.
It utilizes two independent portals — one for visualization and one for instrumentation — which grants wider maneuverability and improved ergonomics. Compared with conventional microdiscectomy, unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) provides enhanced illumination and magnification while reducing tissue trauma. Indications for UBE lumbar discectomy are symptomatic lumbar disc herniation, radiculopathy or neural compression unresponsive to conservative management. Contraindications include spinal instability, infection, prior fusion at the operative level and significant deformity. [1st 2 paragraphs]
