Lower Merion High School LMHS Pedestrian Underpass Site planning
Montgomery Avenue is a major arterial roadway with two lanes in each direction that passes through Lower Merion Township providing access from Bala Cynwyd to Haverford. Students at Lower Merion High School currently cross Montgomery Avenue at three different signalized intersections located between School House Lane and Owen Road. Students walking to and from school are subject to hazardous vehicular traffic due to short signal timing and limited sight distance for drivers along Montgomery Avenue. The roadway also separates the school buildings from the athletic fields, located south of the avenue. Physical education classes and students participating in after school activities are constantly crossing the dangerous roadway. JCJD Design Engineers (JCJD) has investigated various design alternatives to improve pedestrian traffic at Lower Merion High School. Practical and feasible improvements were sought and developed into six potential alternative improvement plans. JCJD evaluated each of the alternatives based on feasibility, constructability, and cost. The impact on traffic, the surrounding neighborhood, and the campus appearance were also considered. After careful assessment, JCJD designed a pedestrian underpass between the High School and the athletic fields beneath Montgomery Avenue. The design includes handicapped-accessible approaches and redesigned parking that enhance the campus for students, staff, and visitors, while improving pedestrian and vehicular safety and easing the traffic flow.
