About
Throughout my career, I have been passionate about developing programs that help people cope more effectively with stressful life events to prevent and decrease consequential psychological problems and emotional difficulties, especially depression. In particular, I co-developed an evidenced-based, psychosocial intervention, called Problem-Solving Therapy, which has recently been revised and renamed Emotion-Centered Problem-Solving Therapy. We have effectively applied these interventions to a wide variety of populations, including depressed adults, cancer patients and their caregivers, intellectually disabled adults experiencing psychological difficulties, sex offenders, and adults suffering from heart disease. During the past several years, as a consultant to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and the U.S Air Force, I co-developed various versions of Moving Forward, a problem-solving based therapy geared to enhance the mental health of Veteran and active service member populations. More recently, I have become interested in the treatment and prevention of suicide, particularly among these two military groups, as well as among college students.
