This chapter provides an overview of the key principles involved in providing psychotherapy and medication to women of childbearing age who wish to become pregnant. Key features of the risk—benefit discussion that providers must have with patients are highlighted. Breastfeeding and managing illness exacerbations when patients discontinue medication are discussed. Principles that facilitate collaborative care and a team approach are illustrated with clinical examples.
