Abstract

Algorithms Decision support systems Facilities planning Mathematical models Optimization
Facilities layout planning, an area that is constantly evolving with improvements to the body of models and algorithms for supporting layout decisions, may currently be carried out using experience-based approaches, specialized models, or other specialized optimization methods. A group of university researchers have developed methodological steps for applying knowledge-based decision support that includes most of the domain-specific considerations for manufacturing plant layout design. The researchers are currently working to develop an appropriate paradigm for knowledge representation. The knowledge-based system under development consists of a user interface, a knowledge base, and an inference engine. The system will interact with users while navigating through an inference tree, by posing questions about the characteristics of the facility for which layout planning is being done.
