Dance education in practice, v 1(3), pp 8-10
03 Jul 2015
Abstract
Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, are extremely common in adolescent girls. This article looks at the common symptoms and societal root causes of the syndrome and how it might be triggered by dance class traditions, including teacher criticism, peer pressure, and competition. Practices that make a safer atmosphere for our most vulnerable students include devaluing thinness, sound nutrition information, and stress management.
