EFFECT OF ECCENTRICITY ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF BRICKWORK
Proc. Br. Ceram. Soc, (30), pp.140-140
01 Jan 1982
Abstract
The result of fifty-seven brick masonry prisms tested under compression normal to the bed joints with different eccentricities is reported. Load-moment interaction curves are presented for the three different mortars used. The effect of strain gradient on the compressive strength was investigated using the available failure criteria for brick masonry under concentric compression. Comparisons of test results with the governing differential equations for brittle materials having no tension capacity are also presented along with Canadian and British masonry code design equations. An expression which accounts for the effect of strain gradient is proposed to relate the eccentric compressive strength of masonry to its concentric compressive strength. 9pp 4fig 4tab
