Abstract
Recent investigations have suggested an immune basis for myasthenia gravis. When generalized symptoms of myasthenia develop, thymectomy is the treatment of choice and should be performed as soon as possible after the symptoms develop. Although the thymus gland seems to be central to the disease process and its removal may be clinically beneficial, its role is largely undefined. When findings are restricted to the ocular muscles, thymectomy is not performed and drug therapy is used.
