Open-Ending a Senior Modern Physics Laboratory
American journal of physics, v 40(10), pp 1383-1388
Oct 1972
Abstract
Many students, especially good theoretically inclined ones, dislike laboratory courses. There is often financial pressure to reduce laboratory courses, which are expensive on a student credit-hour basis. This paper describes an effort to increase the flexibility of a senior modern physics laboratory, which is well equipped, by eliminating rigid scheduling, giving students choice of experiments, and allowing them to do experiments in depth. Student motivation, interest, and learning were considerably increased. A brief description of the laboratory is given, together with details of some new experiments and recommended books.
