The thermal expansion of a number of select [M.sub.n+1]A[X.sub.n] (MAX) phases is measured. A good relation is found between the thermal expansion anisotropy and the elastic constant [c.sub.13] and the anisotropy in thermal expansion is related to the bonding between the M-A elements.
