Enhancement of Seismic Performance of Partially Grouted Reinforced Masonry Shear Walls

Abstract
Almost all low-rise reinforced concrete masonry buildings constructed outside the West Coast are partially grouted. Past research on partially grouted masonry shear walls have shown that current Masonry Standard Joint Committee (MSJC 2011) code’s provisions overestimate the shear capacity of this type of shear walls. NSF has awarded Drexel University, University of Minnesota and University of California-San Diego a grant to study seismic performance and design of partially-grouted reinforced masonry buildings. This project will result in economically competitive design details and retrofit methods to enhance the seismic performance and safety of this system. The outcome of the experimental and analytical investigations will be instrumental in improving code’s design provisions for new construction and in seismic retrofitting of deficient existing buildings. This paper presents results of shear wall tests conducted at Drexel University to investigate the effect of reinforcement detail (single versus adjacent double reinforcing cells with same amount of steel) on seismic response of cantilever shear walls. Two full-scale walls (12’-6” by 12’-6”) with single reinforcement (wall W1) and double reinforcement (wall W2) were subjected to in-plane quasi static reversed cyclic horizontal displacements at the top. A similar wall to W2 was built with joint reinforcement to investigate its contribution to the shear capacity of the walls. Axial stress of 20 psi was applied using two vertical actuators. Wall W1 behavior was a shear-dominated behavior whereas wall W2 had a flexural-dominated behavior. Double reinforcing detail resulted in 35 percent increase in shear capacity and 67 percent increase in deformation capacity (top drift) compared to the single reinforced wall. It is, therefore, concluded that the proposed reinforcement detail has a significant contribution in enhancing the seismic performance of partially grouted concrete masonry shear walls. Test results also indicated that joint reinforcement did not improve the seismic performance of partially grouted reinforced ( double cells reinforcing) shear walls.
