Assesment of Eutrophication in the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor System: Use of SAV Biotic Indicators of Estuarine Condition

2009
Abstract
Eutrophication poses a threat to the long-term health of the Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary. Nutrient enrichment and associated organic carbon loading in this shallow, coastal lagoon have been linked to an array of cascading environmental problems such as increased micro- and macroalgal growth, harmful algal blooms (HABs), altered benthic invertebrate communities, impacted harvestable fisheries, and loss of essential habitat (e.g., seagrass and shellfish beds). This study examines the demographics of Zostera marina in the estuary over the 2008 study period to determine its status and trends. The environmental factors responsible for changes in the structure and function of the seagrass beds are also discussed.
