About

Tara Thompson, DNP, MSN, MA, PMHNP-BC, is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine. Throughout her career she has been involved in the precepting and mentoring of nursing and residency education.
Dr. Thompson started her career as a therapist after earning a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology degree from Eastern University where she was trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy and systemic therapy. She later decided to change direction and pursue a career in nursing. She worked in cardiology and neurology before returning to psychiatry. Dr. Thompson has been working with patients across the lifespan in multiple settings including outpatient psychiatry where she treats individuals with mood disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD and trauma-related disorders. She is also experienced in working in acute psychiatric inpatient care, psychiatric emergency services and consultation-liaison psychiatry focusing on the care of patients with comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions.
Dr. Thompson believes that people are multifaceted, and that understanding their lives and experiences requires the ability to look at treatment from multiple perspectives. She believes in nurturing the capacity for resilience and growth while treating mental health.
