TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING: CHANGING THE LENS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
INTED2015: 9TH INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY, EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE, pp.3131-3133

Abstract
Profound transformations occur as learners reconcile newly acquired learning with prior knowledge, experiences and beliefs. Transformative learning engages students in reflections about the learning content, the processes essential to understanding the content, and the premises that lead the learner to assess/reconsider assumptions, rather than as a result of being exposed to new content. It has been asserted that "content is the clay of knowledge construction"; specifically, learning takes place when it is fashioned into something meaningful. Learners are transformed when they are able to challenge received knowledge, actively question other views, and take on ownership for their personal views. The measurement of learner engagement is the quality and quantity of interaction among students, content, and faculty in the class. The engaged learner assumes responsibility for learning, works collaboratively and not competitively, explores resources to move beyond content acquisition, and, lastly, assessment is performance based and ongoing. There are many methods to assist instructors in managing course content, facilitating interaction with and between students, providing guidance and feedback, and promoting student engagement. It has been said that student motivation is directly linked to satisfaction and retention in online classes. When students experience control over their learning, but also the challenge and support of faculty and classmates, navigating the ocean of online learning is successful.
